Real World Background
Vyones is a fictional French town created by 'weird fiction' writer Clark Ashton Smith in 1930. The town is first mentioned by Smith in The End of the Story in 1930, before being fully fleshed out as the setting of The Maker of Gargoyles in 1932.
In Smith's fiction, Vyones is one of the principal towns of the fictional French province of Averoigne, a region infamous for sinister and supernatural phenomena. As in the Gargoyles Universe, Smith's Vyones is noteworthy for its majestic cathedral and all too realistic stone grotesques.
