Hakata (博多) is a port in Japan.

History

In 1274, Siobhan Canmore's hunt for The Demon brought her to Japan, where she disembarked in the port city of Hakata. ("Forever Sound the Mystic Chords of Memory...")

Real World Background

Located on the north end of the Japanese island of Kyūshū, since at least the 7th Century AD Hakata has served as the country's primary port for trade with mainland Asia. [1]

When Kublia Khan invaded Japan in 1274, Samurai built a stone wall along the coast of Hakata Bay to aid in the region's defenses.

On April 1st, 1889, Hakata and neighboring Fukuoka (福岡) to the west officially merged into the modern prefecture of Fukuoka. Today, the name Hakata serves as not only one name of the seven wards in the Fukuoka prefecture, but also much of the historical Hakata areas of the city, including its bay and train station.
