Real World Background

Born around 1066, Irene Doukaina (in Greek, Εἰρήνη Δούκαινα) was the daughter of Andronikos Doukas and Maria of Bulgaria. In 1078, she married Alexios Komnenos and bore nine children with him. Towards the end of Alexios's reign, she attempted to secure her first-born daughter, Anna Komnene, and her son-in-law, Nikephoros Bryennios, to the throne. Despite her efforts, the heir apparent remained Emperor Alexios's preferred choice, John II Komnenos – her third-born.
