Adamantium is an indestructible alloy.
History
The Negative Zone warlord Annihilus struck a bargin with Russian supervillains Yuri and Kondrati Topolov, and the robotic gargoyle Coldsteel, to provide them with the raw ores necessary to synthesize adamantium. Kondrati had planned to use the alloy to make his armor and Coldsteel's robotic frame indestructible. Unfortunately for Coldsteel and the Topolovs, their plot was thwarted by the combined efforts of the Manhattan Clan and the Fantastic Four before the trade could be completed. ("Clan and Family...")
Characteristics
According to Kondrati Topolov, adamantium is indestructible. The raw ores necessary to synthesize it are rare on Earth but plentiful in the Negative Zone. ("Clan and Family...")
Production Background
Adamantium first appeared in Avengers Vol. 1 #66 (May, 1969), written by Roy Thomas with art by Barry Windsor-Smith and Syd Shores.
In Marvel continuity, the indestructible alloy was invented by Dr. Myron MacLain, the same metallurgist responsible for creating Captain America's iconic vibranium-steel shield. In the original Avengers storyline, Dr. MacLain's first batch of Adamantium is stolen by the robotic supervillain Ultron to create an indestructible body for himself, much as Coldsteel and the Topolovs had planned to do in "Clan and Family...".
Though originally created as a "maguffin" to upgrade the Avenger's archvillain Ultron, Adamantium is arguably far better known as being the alloy chemically bonded to the skeleton of the mutant superhero Wolverine.
