Real World Background
Now situated in modern day Spain, by the 11th Century it was a part of greater Al-Andalus, a collection of Muslim caliphates on the Iberian peninsula. Following the collapse of the Caliphate of Córdoba in 1010, the city became its own independent principality, now referred to as the Taifa of Valenica (طائفة بلنسية). In October 1092, El Cid besieged Valencia, overtaking the city in May 1094.
