Pope Leo IX was the Bishop of Rome in 1050 when Macbeth made his pilgrimage from Scotland. [1][2]

Real World Background

Born Bruno von Egisheim-Dagsburg in 1002, he was selected for the papacy by the Holy Roman Emperor in 1049. The year 1054 marked not only the end of Leo IX's papacy but also the decisive breakdown and ultimate schism between the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Churches. Despite this, he was canonized as a saint in 1082 for dedicating his papacy to eliminating simony (i.e., the selling of church offices or sacred objects) and clerical marriage. [3]
