The Mole Man

The Mole Man is a Subterranean supervillain who commands an army of Kaiju and Moloids, and an enemy of the Fantastic Four.

History

When the Labyrinth Clan discovered a hidden tunnel connected to the Mole Man's underground kingdom, Angela and Broadway called in the Thing and the Human Torch to help investigate. Unfortunately, the paranoid Mole Man took the heroes presence in his domain as an invasion, unleashing an army of monstrous Kaiju on the interlopers in retaliation. Fortunately, Mister Fantastic was eventually able to synthesize an Anti-Kaiju Compound that successfully repelled the Mole Man's forces. ("Clan and Family...")

Characteristics

The Mole Man is a short, portly human clad in a green jump-suit and cape, along with a slitted purple visor over his eyes. He also wields a gnarled wooden staff. During his battle with the Manhattan Clan and the Fantastic Four, the Mole Man displayed little to no aptitude for direct combat, preferring to let his subterranean legions do his fighting for him.

Appearances

Production Background

The Mole Man first appeared in Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #1 (August 1961), and was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee.

The Mole Man has the distinction of being the very first supervillain to battle the Fantastic Four in their debut appearance and has since gone on to become one of their most recurring foes. Originally a self-styled explorer named Harvey Rupert Elder, the future Mole Man was ostracized by society for a combination of his dwarfish appearance and misanthropic personality. During his explorations in remote corners of the Earth, Elder stumbled on a passage to Subterranea, a vast undergrounds realm populated by various monstrous creatures and a race of primitive humanoids known as the "Moloids". Dubbing himself the "Mole Man", Elder quickly set himself up as a ruler over his section of Subterranea and the creatures within.

When not attempting to wreak vengeance on the Fantastic Four or conquer the surface world, Mole Man's time is usually spent battling various other Subterranean warlords or factions striving for dominance in the underground realms, such as the immortal Tyrannus (formerly the real world Roman Emperor Romulus Augustulus) or the genetically engineered Deviants of Lemuria.

Gregg Berger provided the voice for Mole Man in the 1994 Fantastic Four Animated Seried.
