DEMONA WILL MAKE SURE THIS CAGED DUCK SINGS!
The creators of the original Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck animated series return for the second installment of their hotly anticipated comics crossover adventure!
With Darkwing's magical amour Morgana Macawber now in Demona's clutches, it's a race against time for the Terror That Flaps in the Night to locate the two sorceresses before Morgana is coerced into revealing the location of the sinister spell book known as the Quackronomicon - and thus handing Demona the keys to world domination! But DW won't get far without Elisa and Goliath's help - and the head of the Manhattan Clan is down for the count until sunset. With half a day of downtime to contend with, can this unlikely trio of heroes crack the case before Morgana cracks under Demona's interrogation? And while we're on the subject, what have Launchpad and Gosalyn been doing all this time?
The answers to these and many more burning questions will be revealed in the portent-filled pages of Gargoyles/Darkwing Duck #2 - crafted by tandem authors GREG WEISMAN and TAD STONES and artist CIRO CANGIALOSI, and enriched by hand-carved covers from STONES, CANGIALOSI, CLAYTON HENRY, and IVAN BIGARELLA!
The Story
Review
The crossover continues in this second issue - and continues to be as funny as one would expect from its premise.
Darkwing continues to get into amusing (to the reader, that is, not to Darkwing) misfortunes. First, Elisa assigns him to watch over Goliath in stone sleep; Darkwing is anything but thrilled to have to serve as a "statue-sitter", but one "Please" from Elisa and he gives in - to be stuck for the day guarding a stone Goliath, wondering when he's going to wake up, trying desperately to rouse him from his stone sleep - and feeling utterly exasperated when he learns that gargoyles awaken at sundown, commenting "That kernel of knowledge would have proven quite useful." Not to mention, when Goliath does finally awaken, Darkwing gets a piece of stone skin in his beak.
As if that wasn't enough, Darkwing's catchphrases get their own response from the "Gargoyles" cast; when he cries "Let's get dangerous!", he then has to make it clear to an unimpressed Goliath that he meant both of them, not just himself. And Demona displays distinct signs of impatience at his "I am the terror that flaps in the night" cry, interrupting him before he can complete it (probably the first time it's happened to DW!).
Demona strikes back at Darkwing when he, Goliath, and Elisa arrive at the warehouse where she's been holding Morgana prisoner and forcing her to talk (in a style that shows again how the "Gargoyles" elements are being modified to match the atmosphere of "Darkwing Duck" - the torture spell she inflicts upon Morgana tickles her with feathers); quickly getting the measure of St. Canard's crime fighter (who, as one of his adversaries in the Disney Afternoon cartoon remarked, "has an ego the size of a small planet"), and noting also just how impressed Morgana is with Goliath, she uses a jealousy spell on him to turn him against Goliath. (In another nice touch, Elisa proceeds to turn Demona's spell on her, making use of Demona's own jealousy towards Elisa.) The result is more comical humiliation for Darkwing - including his attempt to use itching gas on Goliath backfiring spectacularly.
Demona finally forces Morgana to talk by threatening Darkwing, and learns that her target, the Quackronomicon, is hidden away in the Mirror Realm, in the Vault of the aptly-named wizard Gandersnatch the Great - and rushes into the mirror to retrieve it. Morgana is not too concerned about this development; she knows that the Vault is well-protected, so that Demona isn't likely to recover the book - except Gosslyn, listening in on the exchange, ventures into the Mirror Realm herself to foil Demona - leading to a confrontation between the two redheads that doesn't spell well for Gosslyn....

Darkwing's description of Goliath as "a glorified lawn gnome" might be a reference to the "Lawn Gnomes" parody of Gargoyles in Freakazoid!.
