Theseus was the human that killed Taurus's ancestor, the Minotaur. He would likely have appeared in flashback for the main series or in TimeDancer. [1]

History

In antiquity, he was the son of Aethra and either Aegeus or Poseidon. [2][3] On his return from Crete, he became King of Athens (after Aegeus's suicide). He later married the Amazonian Queen, Antiope, and had a son, Hyppolytus. After Antiope's death, he married Phaedra. [4]

Athenians likely had conflicting opinions about him, due to his legacy where he is credited with both his initial rescue of their youth from the Minotaur (according to the Athenians) to his later abandonment of the city. [5][6]

At some point in time, he had an affair with Titania. [7] The two were featured as characters in William Shakespeare's play, A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Appearances

Real World Background

Theseus (Θησεύς in Greek) is featured in several surviving ancient poems and works, including Homer's Odyssey, Euripedes's Hippolytus, Sophocles's Oedipus at Colonus, Ovid's Metamorphoses, and Plutarch's Parallel Lives.

Production Background

Theseus is one of Greg Weisman's favorite characters, but had no immediate plans to incorporate him in Gargoyles outside of correcting the apparent anachronism in A Midsummer Night's Dream. [8][9]
