Dunsinane is located south of Moray in Scotland.

History

It was in Dunsinane that Demona massacred guards to steal food to feed her clan in 1020. [1] In 1032, she battled the Hunter Gillecomgain to a standstill before the dawn cut their battle short. ("City of Stone" Part One, "City of Stone" Part Two)

Finally, in 1057, Demona led her clan and Macbeth's army in a battle against Canmore and the English which ended in a stalemate. ("City of Stone" Part Four)

Around the time Macbeth's forces were defeated at Castle Moray, his cousin, Thorfinn, was killed at Dunsinane. [2]

Real World Background

The historical Battle of Dunsinane took place on July 27, 1054, three years before Macbeth's death at the Battle of Lunfanan in 1057.

In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, the Weird Sisters prophesied in Act IV, scene i that "Macbeth shall never vanquished be until / Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill / Shall come against him." Later in Act V, scene iv, Malcolm leads his army, along with Macduff and Siward (the Elder) the Earl of Northumberland, against Dunsinane Castle. While encamped in Birnam Wood, the soldiers are ordered to cut down and carry tree limbs to camouflage their numbers, thus fulfilling the Witches' third prophecy.

Production Background

Greg Weisman originally intended to include a counterpart to Shakespeare's Birnam Wood scene in "City of Stone", but had to drop it for lack of room. [3]
