Angelika in 1138.

Angelika is a female gargoyle originally from the Northumbria Clan and later the adopted daughter of Demona.

"You would do to them what was done to your clan and mine?" - Angelika to Demona, ("For Not Everything With Wings...")

History

The gargoyle who would take the name Angelika hatched in 1078 and was a part of the Northumbria Clan. [1]

When Demona first arrived in Northumbria in 1093, the young rookling was immediately fascinated by her. She approached Demona when the older gargoyle was alone to ask why she carried a sword, and showed no fear when Demona turned on her, brandishing the blade to threaten the child not to sneak up on her before ultimately having her question answered. On November 13th, the rookling, while climbing through dug tunnels, overheard Demona arguing with the clan's leader and second-in-command. Demona was urging them to scatter the clan before sunrise, as staying in one place made them too easy a target for the humans. But while the two adult gargoyles refused to heed Demona's advice, the rookling did – hiding herself underground. Because of this, she survived when King Malcolm Canmore massacred her clan.

She awoke and found her shattered clan and, within the rookery, the clan's shattered eggs. As she wept over them, she turned on Demona when the older female discovered her. After experiencing such horrors, she blamed Demona for her survival wished she had perished with her clan. Demona scowled at this and shoved her to the ground, coldly telling the rookling she was wise for listening to the warnings the rest of her clan ignored. Demona then led the rookling to take vengeance where they came upon Canmore, fleeing the Battle of Alnwick. Demona took swift vengeance upon the Hunter and was determined to end Canmore's entire line, but the rookling dragged her away to protect Demona from the scores of soldiers. She continued to be fascinated by Demona when the gargoyle spoke of her immortality. When she asked if they should hold a Wind Ceremony, Demona had no interest and was prepared to leave the rookling behind to do as she liked – wishing her luck as she could not be burdened with her care.

Demona took off over the sea, but the rookling followed – telling Demona that she wasn't following her, just going in the same direction. Inspired by Demona's name, the rookling took the name Angelika. ("Fools Rush In...")

1103 to 1111

Ten years later, Angelika and Demona found themselves on the European mainland, working with the human El Cid. For five years their interests were aligned with the medieval knight, though Demona refused to trust him. To ensure their survival, Demona and Angelika hid in the hills every night before dawn.

By 1108, the two's adolescent gargoyle's coincidental path with Demona led the both of them to Galicia. There, she met the gargoyles Skade, Magni, and Modi, where she learned of their partnership with Sigurd Magnusson, the young King of Norway. After sharing details of her past exploits with the gargoyle sailors, Angelika brought them to Demona where they ultimately convinced her to join King Sigurd's expedition, after promising both her protection and the chance to slaughter King Sigurd's human enemies.

For the next three years, Angelika and Demona fought alongside King Sigurd and his fleet of sixty ships, sailing across the Mediterranean Sea. Life at sea suited the adolescent, who relished both the violence and the plundering. At Formentera, Angelika acquired a Gold Locket from the Saracen cliffside stronghold. Angelika no doubt appreciated the comradery other gargoyles, although by the Siege of Sidon it was evident (to Demona, in particular) that Angelika's relationship with Magni was becoming romantic. In January 1111, their voyaging found them in Constantinople, where King Sigurd and his soldiers, human and gargoyle alike, were greeted at the court of Emperor Alexios Komnenos. Two months into the fleet's stay, the Byzantine emperor assumed most of King Sigurd's soldiers, offering them to serve in his Varangian Guard (including Magni and Modi). When Magni shared this news with Angelika, he was confident Emperor Alexios would make the same offer to Angelika. Despite Magni making it clear to Angelika that he personally wanted her to stay due to their burgeoning relationship with one another, Angelika ultimately turned him down. Returning to Sigurd's Flagship, she found Demona hastily packing up her personal spoils from the Box. Catching her mother off guard, Angelika assured Demona that she was still going her way, determined not to lose her clan again. ("Fortune Favors the Brave...")

Angelika in 1138

By 1138, Demona and Angelika temporarily settled atop a cathedral in Vyones, France, much to Angelika's confusion. Reminding Demona how she herself was adamant that France and its humans hated their kind; Demona took that moment to bitterly point out the irony in humans hunting gargoyles to extinction but then superstitiously believe that simple sculptures would protect them. The following evening they both awoke to the sight of the human, Blaise Reynard, Demona was immediately on alert to the human's presence while Angelika realized and reminded Demona that if he meant any harm, he would have attacked them while they slept. Blaise spoke of his admiration for gargoyles and while most of humanity had relegated them to myth, he still remembered, when he was a child, the night sky teemed with gargoyles. Demona continued to snarl, still blaming the humans responsible, and Blaise, apologetic, explained that he sought to honor their memory with his creations: Grimalkin and Satyre. Angelika expressed admiration for his work, admitting that Grimalkin gives her chills. Demona, on the other hand, continued to dismiss his artwork as "forgeries" – but admitted that Reynard captured a certain fierceness. Suddenly, Grimalkin's eyes and mouth began glowing, the statue began to animate and took to the skies as Demona, Angelika, and Blaise watched.

Angelika expressed her surprise that Demona agreed to Reynard's terms rather quickly, but noted that, at the least, he did seem sincere. Demona cynically reminded Angelika that all humans hide their cruelty – sometimes even from themselves. But Angelika side-eyed Demona, questioning the implication that only humans behave that way, causing an agitated Demona to ask what that was supposed to mean just as the second statue, Satyre, cackled to life. Angelika pursued Satyre into the sky, wanting to see where it was heading. Demona warned her daughter that she is still too rash. But Angelika reminded Demona that not only is she no longer a child, but that Demona taught her since she was a rookling to make her own decisions.

After the Stone Golems killed Heloise Reynard and Blaise was killed by his own creation, Demona and Angelika landed on the cathedral with the younger gargoyle wondering if this is what they look like in the eyes of humans – but Demona bitterly sneered that humans are too corrupt to note any differences between true gargoyles and such enchanted creatures. As Demona reached for an abandoned sledgehammer, Angelika briefly protested, asking if Demona would do to the stone golems what humans had done to both their past clans. Demona did not hesitate, reminding Angelika that she does what she must as she took the hammer to the stone golems and destroyed them – with Angelika watching in the rain. When Demona was finished, she left the hammer within the rubble and ordered that they both leave this cursed town. Come sunrise, deep in the forest, Demona and Angelika slept for the day – some distance apart. ("For Not Everything With Wings...")

1997

Braids of Angelika and Demona's hair.

By 1997, a lock of Angelika's hair was entwined with a lock of Demona's hair and kept inside a Gold Locket. Demona broke into the Metropolitan Museum of Art, assaulted a security guard, and battled the Manhattan Clan to claim this prize for no apparent reason other than sentimentality. ("A Prize Beyond Compare...")

Characteristics

Angelika had blonde hair, which she often wore in a large braid. By the time of her adventures at sea, she was capable of not only fighting with her own natural defenses, but also with swords like her mother.

Appearances

Apocrypha

In 1094, Angelika was abducted in Valencia by the alchemist, Esteban Corazón de Ablo, in an attempt to bleed her in the belief that he could use her blood to achieve immortality through his Elixir Vitae. Demona located them and freed Angelika - but the alchemist's powers were too much and they were forced to flee. ("Both Alike In Dignity...")

Production Background

Unlike Angela, she is not the biological daughter of Demona. [2] [3]

The alternative spelling of "Angelica' was briefly considered as an alias for Demona during the script writing process for the pilot. [4]
