"I was uninterested in a hollow crown... I had a higher calling... a righteous mission..." - Donald Canmore ("Fools Rush In...")
History
Domnall, the second son of Canmore and Ingibjorg, was born in 1069. [1] Growing up, his father regale Domnall and his many siblings with tales of the Usurper, how the Usurper bargained with the forces of darkness to murder Duncan, and how a demon was summoned to do the usurper's bidding. Canmore told of how the demon turned on the usurper and how he had slain the usurper and cast the demon back to Hell, but would warn his children to be vigilant of the demon's gargoyle minions and guard against the demon's return. Domnall did not necessarily heed these tales of demons and gargoyles.
In 1093, Camore summoned his children to Edinburgh Castle to accompany him on an excursion to England on behalf of William Rufus, and hoping his children would learn the lessons of the trip to govern as he would. They journeyed to Northumbria, to Bamburgh Castle where his father met with Robert de Mowbray, announcing their intent to sack a nearby village so that Lord Mowbray would should more sufficient loyalty to the crown. Canmore and his sons destroyed a village, which Domnall seemed ambivalent about - just as he seemed ambivalent about destroying a local clan of gargoyles.
Following both atrocities, Canmore and his children were ambushed at Alnwick by Robert de Mowbray's forces. During the battle, the crown prince, Edward was killed and Canmore attempted to flee. As Domnall cut a path through Lord Mowbray's forces, his elder brother, Donnchad, ordered him to find and protect their father. Domnall arrived in time to witness the demon his father warned him of slay Canmore before being pulled away by a younger gargoyle.
With his father dead, along with Edward, the family began infighting for the Scottish throne, plunging Scotland into chaos. But Domnall was uninterested in the crown and disappeared, following the battle, the world believing him to be dead. Shamed over having failed to heed his father's warnings, he anglicized his name to Donald Canmore and took up the mask of the Hunter. ("Fools Rush In...")
Through him, the Canmore family maintained the Hunt for "the Demon", and all gargoyles. [2][3]
Donald Canmore should not be confused with Donalbain, Canmore's historical brother who became Donald III of Scotland.
