Real World Background
In contrast to their depiction in Gargoyles comic, Edith was likely already living and studying at Romsey Abbey with her sister, under the supervision of their aunt Christina, Queen Margaret's sister, who was abbess. Later studying at Wilton Abbey, Mary left the monastery in 1096.
Mary married Count Eustace of Boulogne; their daughter Matilda married Stephen (who was King of England from 1135 to 1154, and who would contend with his cousin Matilda, the daughter of Mary's older sister Edith, over the English throne). Mary died in 1116, and was buried in Bermondsey Abbey.
